Match Reports

U15 Leinster League

Ardee 00 Longford 12

Our team travelled to Ardee RFC where they were welcomed by a wet and dirty morning.

Despite the adverse circumstances, a couple of minutes into the game and after a period of strong Longford play, Gareth O’Hara scored the first try of the game.  The condition of the pitch was very poor and the match suffered as a result.  It was a tough slog and discipline was poor.  This was compounded by a noisy, heckling crowd.  The referee duly warned players and coaches to refrain from unnecessary comments and to channel their communication through their captain. The game continued and after sustained pressure from the Longford front five, Gareth found a gap into the Ardee defence line and secured what looked like second try. Unfortunately, the referee judged that Ardee had prevented the grounding and the try was not awarded.

The half time whistle was blown, Longford 5 – Ardee 0

The second half was more of the same but Longford had the upper hand and were putting in the work to make the hard yards. Longford were awarded a penalty on the Ardee 20M line.  Simon Moorhead kicked this with ease and put Longford a comfortable 2 scores ahead.

Longford were playing with the wind in the second half and used this to position the play in the Ardee half.  They were awarded a scrum on the Ardee 10 yard line.  After a strong and steady scrum, Gareth collected the ball and crashed 3 tackles to scored the second try of the game.  Longford 13 – Ardee 0.

After a further 20 attritional minutes, Ardee, unable to score, could not manage their discipline and the referee was forced to blow the whistle ten minutes early.

This was always going to be a forwards game and the Longford pack stood up on the day.  David Connolly and Gareth O’Hara tackled tirelessly throughout the match

Longford has now qualified for the Leinster League final which will take place in a few weeks’ time.

Next training session on Tuesday at 7:30pm.
