Longford Canterbury Warriors overcome Athy 10 0
16/11/2015
The warriors
faced Athy for the first time this season in terrible conditions at CPL park
this was their third game in a row.
From the kick off the warriors were on the attack with the forwards driving
through the Athy defence, good ground was gained by Amanda Lennon & Helen
Conefrey. Athy manage to gain possession but straight away great tackling from
Lorraine Connor in the centre forces a knock on, Scrum to Longford, Nuala
McGoey cleverly went to blind side and popped to Cli O Donnell who get pushed
into touch just outside the 22. Athy win the line out but Longford hit straight
back with a great steal and powerfull driving by Emma Mulvey & Mairead Coy
make huge ground. Penalty to Longford because Athy were offside. Carol Manning
puts it over the bar in difficult kicking conditions to give Longford a 3 to 0
lead.
Athy kick off and Amanda receives and drives through the defence. Leanne Early
takes on the ball and pushes Longford back inside the Athy 22. Line out to
Longford and the forwards set up a great driving maul, Fiona Dowd and Lisa
Brady power forward drawing in the Athy defence the ball gets popped to Cli who
drives over to score a class try, amazing team effort. Carol converts to make
it 10 to 0.
Longford again take it right back at Athy and with a clever kick
from Carol and a great chase from Claire Clabby she knocks the Athy player out
over the line with a super tackle. Line out to Longford and this time they
moved it out the backs where great ground was gained by Rebecca O Hara on the
wing. Athy gain possession due to the wet conditions and kick it out. Line out to
Longford, fantastic driving by forwards but in the wet the ball gets knocked on,
scrum to Athy who are finding it hard to get out of their half, they win a
penalty and kick to touch for half time.
Longford kick off the second half against the wind. Sharon Mc Keown comes in at
scrum half. Athy use the wind well and start kicking to gain ground but Carol
at full back was up to the test. Athy are on the attack with some good work
from their forwards and the warriors defence has to work hard to keep them out.
Aishling Ormsby puts in some cracking tackles to stop them. Sarah Tierney comes
in for her first match and gets stuck in straight away.
The warriors decide to keep it tight and start picking from the base of the
rucks and with all the forwards working well together they manage to keep
possession, but with the very wet ground they find it hard to get over the Athy
line. Athy have most of the ball but like longford just can't make it count on
the score board. The second half ends with no more scores. Longford 10 Athy 0.
Claire Clabby is awarded player of the match.
This was another good result in wet and slippery conditions and with three wins
in a row confidence is high.
The warriors now face Garda /westmanstown in CPL park Longford next Sunday at
1pm.
Training continues every Tuesday and Friday at 7:30
