Men’s XV News
13112022 Leinster League Division 1B Athy 28-12 Longford
The initial stages of the game were a close affair with the play staying between the 22s. It wasn't until the latter stages of the first half that saw some scores!
A scrum, from a crooked Athy line-out, gave Longford good go forward ball. Longford worked the ball to the line. With Athy giving away another penalty, a quick tap ball saw Kieran Gorman cross the line for the first score. Athy 00-05 Longford
Longford quickly had to defend from the restart. The clearance kick saw Athy work the ball across the pitch to score. With the wind with them the try was also converted. Athy 07-05 Longford.
Longford were caught once again from the second half kick-off. A clever kick through saw Athy cross the line for their second try. From there, Athy just got stronger, and good go forward ball from the restart and they crossed the line once again to leave score at Athy 21-05 Longford. Thereafter, Longford lifted their game somewhat and carried well from a line out in the 22 and Benny McManus crossed the whitewash to close the gap. Athy 21-12 Longford.
Longford were then awarded a penalty inside the 22. A quick tap and go play saw Longford carry well but Athy defended excellently to hold up the ball. Further good carries from Longford forwards, Benny McManus, Kieran O’Gorman, and Podge Farrell, saw Longford gain territory but Athy defended well and managed to keep Longford at bay.
At the half way point of the 2nd half. Longford had some good possession in attack, but they just couldn't convert this possession into points on the scoreboard, and on one occasion a very good maul was held up! Athy made the best of another Longford mistake to run in another score. Athy 28-12 Longford, with 10 minutes remaining.
With Longford under pressure, a good steal from Podge Farrell saw Longford clear their line.
The last ten minutes saw Athy put Longford under serious pressure, but Longford worked hard to defend. Longford were awarded a penalty in final minutes. Some great carries followed from Seamus McKeown and Benny McManus again, but the Longford men just couldn't convert to points. Final score Athy 28-12 Longford.

Longfords Forwards were dominant in the scrums and Line Outs with Lucy O Connor winning a number of opposition ball in the air. Longford’s defence was exceptionally strong throughout the game.
The girls worked together and put on a super display of Rugby, working hard as a team to bring each try across the line.

U16 Boys Tullamore 12-05 Longford
Longford contested well and took possession after the start and were putting together good phases in the opposing half of the pitch. The attacking intent continued and on 8 minutes Shane McGuigan crossed for Longfords score.
Longford kicked well into the breeze to prevent Tullamore from yielding too muck possession in the wrong area of the pitch. Longford were pinged however for continuous penalties and when the eventual conceded try cam, Longford were luck not to be reduced to 14 men, such was the number of penalties against them.
The second half was very similar arm wrestle to the first with both sides not yielding territory or possession too cheaply. On one occasion when Longford did kick the ball unnecessarily it resulted in the score that decided the game.
Longford can be proud of the performance on this occasion as, just last year, the result in the corresponding fixture was a 40-point loss. The improvement in the Longford lads has been impressive and, on another day, they may just have shaded the game.

Boot Room
Parents - Why not check out the hugely popular Boot room here at Longford rugby club where we have a self replenishing stock of replacement boots. You drop in a pair you no longer need and replace it with a pair that fits your child. That way your pair of boots doesn’t go to waste and someone else gets to benefit also, thus also helping someone else save a few Euros.
If you have any boots that you wish to donate or exchange, please bring them into minis training and drop off the office for the attention of Gerry Carty or Pauline Marlowe who will assist with selecting the replacement pair. Boots should be clean, laces intact and no missing studs. No blades will be taken in.
Please note it is not possible to guarantee there will be a suitable replacement available however we have rarely not had some to choose across a wide range of sizes.
International Comment
The Autumn international series continued over the weekend.
Fiji were the opposition in a lacklustre game at the Aviva, that failed to excite despite the 5 tries scored in a 35-17 win. Italy were unlikely victors over Australia, who will be hurting as they visit Dublin next week. SA went down to France in a keenly contested match however yet again it’s the coach who steals the headlines with yet another online cut at the officiating team, a nasty habit that the powers should deal with.
