Longford Women grind out a draw in Dublin’s wind and rain 2020-02-19 10:22:00

17022020 Leinster Women’s League Divisions 4 Wanderers 10 Longford 10

Longford Women traveled to Dublin to face Wanderers following a long break looking to keep up their promotion hopes.  Longford immediately applied lots of pressure from the kick-off but a number of unforced errors and playing against a strong wind meant Longford were on the defensive for the majority of the first half.  The first try of the match was secured by Wanderers, despite constant defensive pressure from Longford, the home side finally got over the try line.  Towards the end of the first half, Longford created a great team try, which started with the forwards making some powerful carries, before it was spread out the backline for Leona Hoare to power through the Wanderers defense to score a well-deserved try for the away side.  Longford showed great defensive resolve and secured a number of turnovers for the final minutes of the first half, with a special shout out to Leanne Keegan for a number of successful steals.  Longford now had the benefit of the strong wind for the second half and hoped to make the most of it. However, it was Wanderers who seemed to be making the headway. A strong performance from Longford’s defense again throughout the 2nd half was needed.  A successful steal by Dora Ledwith led to Longford being on the attack again but it was quickly stole back by Wanderers, as they worked towards a second try they got held up by Maria Kelleher, but eventually Wanderers used their power and crawling along the ground to get their second try of the game.  Longford were determined to get back into the game and with Megan Banahan, Leanne Keegan & Megan Jobe all working in coordination with excellent passages of passing, Longford worked back up the field with Abby Purdy getting the ball and making a sprint to the try line to score her first senior try.  Longford continued fighting for possession and a hard tackle left Monica Bannon down with a bang to the knee; we wish her a speedy recovery.  The game ended due to a knock on during a penalty to Longford with a finishing score of 10-10.  Well done to all involved in today’s game, despite the wind and rain, the Longford Ladies played a collaborative and strong game.  A big shout out to our newest member, Aoife Coleman, for her first game with Longford and a great performance too.  Our next away game is against the unbeaten New Ross in Wexford with all support encouraged.

Training continues every Tuesday and Friday at 7:30 PM.  New players are always welcome!
