Longford score impressive win v Ballinasloe in festive runout 2017-01-03 17:18:00

29/12/16 Senior Men’s Friendly Longford 38 Ballinasloe 17

Longford Senior Men’s XV notched up an impressive home win over the festive season when Connacht Junior League 1A high fliers, Ballinasloe, travelled to CPL Park. A solid first half performance saw the home side run in four tries and set up a platform for this comprehensive win.

This was a clash of two of the oldest clubs in Ireland. The post-Christmas game was a good opportunity to test squad depth and assess dietary indiscipline over the previous couple of days.
Although Ballinasloe managed to poach a few balls at ruck time and consistently pick and drive to good effect their game plan was limited and only really started to gain traction in the second 40.  Longford's ability to engage their back line utilising all 15 on the pitch gave them the advantage on the scoreboard.

Longford always looked comfortable throughout the game and first half line breaks coupled with the home sides ability to spin the ball out wide saw centre partnership Shane Rodgers and Cormac Hughes cross the whitewash three times in the first half.

Michael Horan's side may not have been crowded with their entire compliment of starters, but they showed that they had a solid and competitive pack. However, second half tries by Michael Bannon and Karl Murray added to Longford’s total tally scuppered any resurgence.

The ever reliable Colm Glynn gave another stellar performance in black, while Daniel McHugh showed his versatility in the nine shirt. Ruadhan McDonnell and Barry Stewart displayed the wealth of talent in the back row and Hubie Connolly gave another exemplary show in the number two position.

Longford resume league action this weekend v Edenderry at home in CPL Park with the Development XV kicking off at 13:00 and the Performance XV kicking off at 14:30.
