Warriors secure draw on the road against league leaders Gorey 2016-02-29 17:43:00

Womans Leinster League Division 3: Gorey 10 Longford Canterbury Warriors 10

The Warrior's took the long trip to Gorey to take on the table toppers in the last round of matches in the league. It was a perfect day for rugby and with a semi-final spot and double points up for grabs it was all to play for.  Longford received the kick from the start and set up a few good plays, but it was a scrappy start to the game. Both teams were making mistakes and with a lot of kicking in the opening quarter, it took a while for the teams to settle down. Finally the Warriors started to make some ground and had a scrum just inside the Gorey 22. Longford went down the blindside with Carol Manning and Claire Clabby combining well, the ball was then recycled quickly to on rushing Amanda Lennon who was held up over the line. From the resulting 5 metre scrum Amanda took on the ball and having sucked in a few defender's she passed off to Yvonne Dowd who powered over the line for the first try of the match.
Gorey now came out fighting and were making good ground through their backs with Longford’s Aisling Ormsby putting in some big tackles on the wing to counter this. Having worked an overlap the Gorey winger went flying down the wing, where it looked like she stepped out of touch.  However, play carried on and she passed it inside to score Gorey’s opening try to leave the score five a piece. The rest of the half was played out with both teams having a good cut at each other so it stayed all square at half time.

Longford kicked of the second half and with its forwards really starting to get into the game; Tina Edwards and Mairead Coy were working very hard in the rucks, Lisa and Orla Brady were making good ground and offloading well out of the tackles.  However, the Gorey defence was holding firm. Gorey managed to steal a ball in a ruck and catching the Warriors defence out they ran in an unconverted try against the run of play to leave them five points to the better.
The Warrior's now were the ones to come out fighting and with Helen Conefrey controlling the backline, Lorraine Connor started to break through tackles and with Fiona Dowd and Sharon Leonard starting to get their hands on the ball, Longford were now pounding the Gorey try line. Leanne Early took a great ball up and it took several Gorey defender's to stop her. Yvonne Dowd got within inches of the try line and seeing a small gap Nuala McGoey dotted the ball down on the line. The conversion was narrowly missed to leave the scores all square at 10 apiece.
Lisa O’Donnell and Irene Murtagh were subbed on and again Longford were on the attack. There were some great attacking moves from both forwards and backs. The Warrior's spent most of the second half in possession but just could not find a way past the strong Gorey defence. The match finished all square with 4 points going to both teams.   This meant that the Warriors finished the league in third position.

The Warrior's now can look forward to a semi-final against old rivals Barnhall in Leixlip next Sunday at 13:00. Training continues every Tuesday and Friday at 19:30.
Longford are looking for as much support as possible to travel to Barnhall on Sunday for what promises to be a cracking game.
