Match Reports

U14 Leinster League

Longford U14 5  Edenderry 19

Without the services of a number of front line players, and playing against the big Edenderry pack who relished in the mud bath conditions, a relatively inexperienced Longford team acquitted themselves well despite ending up on the wrong end of a 19 – 5 score line in their Leinster League game over the weekend.  With Edenderry and Longford unbeaten after the first series of matches in the league this game was probably the one which would decide who would top the League at the end of the second phase and while it looks now like Edenderry will top the group there is still a semi-final slot up for grabs where the second placed team will face off against the first placed team in the other group.  Longford’s remaining three fixtures against Wicklow, Kilkenny and Naas are all at home and a semi-final berth is still eminently achievable.

Right from the kick off it was clear that the two teams were in for a dogged afternoon with a greasy ball and mucky underfoot conditions.  With very little attacking play of note it was Edenderry who edged ahead after seven minutes with a try in the left hand corner, well converted by their out half.  Despite the heavy conditions which were not conducive to running rugby it was a back line movement which brought Longford back into the game, Aaron Farrell doing exceptionally well to ground the ball close to the corner flag despite the attention of a number of Edenderry defenders.  Within minutes, however, Edenderry extended their advantage by a further seven points following a succession of rucks from the halfway line followed by a try beneath the posts.  The game was put beyond doubt on the scoreboard after 17 minutes when Edenderry scored their third try, again wide out in the left hand corner.  Despite the fact that they were down by two scores Longford didn’t let the heads drop and were very unfortunate not to cross the line for what would have been a consolation try at death.  Particular mention goes to Kevin O’Neill and Daniel Lynch who acquitted themselves exceptionally well in what was their first competitive game for the Under 14’s.  Best wishes to Mossie McDermott for a speedy recovery following an injury which necessitated his withdrawal from the game.

Squad:  Gary Kenny, Mark McHugh, Ciaran Shannon, JJ Jackson, Dylan Fay, Ciaran McCormack, Ultan O’Sullivan, Mossie McDermott, Aaron Farrell, Shane Mallon, James Doyle, Ryan Dempsey, Jamie Byrne, Maks Napieralski, Kevin O’Neill, Daniel Lynch.
