Match Reports

Longford U15 34 Athboy 05

A cold and wet Saturday morning welcomed the visitors for a second game in row. Last week (21st of November) Longford travelled to Athboy and had a great win. It was clear from the look in their eyes, the Athboy players were determined to win and if not, give us a good run for our money! They didn’t win but put in a great effort.

As soon as the game started, Longford attacked and Gareth O’Hara scored the first try of the game followed by a conversion from Simon Moorhead. Minutes later an aggressive Athboy team broke through the Longford defence line and were heading for a try stopped by Jack Finnegan who cleared the area. Scrum to Athboy, a series of tackles by David Connolly and Craig Gorman and a pass to Jack Finnegan resulted in the second try for Longford. No conversion, so Longford 12 – Athboy 0 - twenty minutes into the game.

Next one of the Athboy players put in a strong tackle and the game had to be stopped until he was brought to Mullingar for a check-up; he was in good spirits and of course unhappy he couldn’t continue the game. We wish him well.

The game re-started and within 3 minutes, a strong and determined Longford team, exceptional passes from James Murphy, Michael Dunne enabled Gareth O’Hara score our third try. This was followed by a conversion and now Longford was leading 19 – 0. Spectacular tackles put in by Daniel Reilly advanced the ball to James Brown to score our fourth try; no conversion and the game resumed with a very strong Athboy pack stopped by our formidable Jonathan Borland and Craig Gorman. At this point the referee blew the half time whistle.

Longford had a full squad of 24 players, this allowed Head Coach Jimmy Murphy make some substitutions and give the opportunity to other players to prove themselves.

Second half started, Longford came back strong with Jonathan Borland broke through a number of the Athboy players and passed the ball to David Reilly, Brandon Maguire then to Dario Cigliano who tested the Athboy defence. Longford continued to put pressure and Jack Finnegan scored another try, no conversion. Athoboy continued to press Longford. Longford were determined to continue scoring which saw a united team carry the ball enabling Simon score last try for Longford. Unfortunately no conversion followed and Athboy put everything they had and found a gap in our defence line and scored a try a few seconds before the game ended.
