Longford bow out of Pre-Season Tournament

Longford exited the Pre-season Colm O’Shea cup with any away loss to Boyne in Drogheda on Saturday.  It was always going to be a tall order as Longford’s squad was stretched to the limit due to player unavailability.  However, Longford put in a creditable performance in going down 38-5, with a number of late tries putting gloss on the score line from Boynes point of view with the half time score being 12-5 to the home side.  Overall, Longford had two worthwhile run outs versus Clondalkin and Boyne and now turn their attention to the start of the Leinster league in three weeks time.  Head to Boyne RFCs match gallery for more photos.

Post Match Reaction from Longford RFC Head Coach Glenn Baskett

“The 38-5 score line doesn’t reflect the effort the boys put in in Drogheda today. I knew as the week progressed our squad was going to be light on numbers travelling Saturday but going with 17 and only 6 backs, that was going to be a real ask on the boys. We had to drop Joe Bennett in at 12 to fill the back line, to give us the full compliment. But then to only have 2 subs to use on a warm day against a team we knew would move the ball, it was always going to test us. But these games are pre-season for us and we got a chance to give young Kola his first start with us and he did well. I cannot fault the effort all 17 boys put in Saturday. For us it’s all about the third weekend in September and Wicklow at home and preparing for that.”

Plan in the run up the Leinster League

Longford Senior Men will be focusing on training hard over next few weeks in preparation for their first league game at in CPL Park in nearly 18 months versus Wicklow on September 19th.  The plan up until then is for training twice weekly, Tuesday and Friday at 8 PM, with a friendly on one of the next two weekends versus probably Monkstown and then straight into league action.  All players are asked to make a special effort over the next three weeks to make training.  We welcome all returning players and new players to the fold.  Any player enquiries to Head Coach Glenn Baskett 0866036175 or Director of Rugby Niall Moran 0879185073
