Longford Senior Men v Monkstown Preview   17/01/2020

by Tommy Butler Longford RFC PRO

Setting the Scene

Longford’s first match of 2020 is verus current run away league leaders Monkstown.  As pointed out last week Longford have five matches remaining and everyone will take on the nature of a cup final starting with Monkstown.  The league might have looked a lot different for both sides had Longford converted a last minute chance to cross the white wash and plunder a win from Sydney Parade.  However, instead Longford are now focusing on securing second place and a shot of promotion and are in an almighty scrap for that place with Tullow and Carlow.  It will take Longford’s best performance of the season to turn over a Monkstown side who have won all their matches in the league to date despite a few very close shaves, one being versus Longford.  Its still all to play for and it starts on Sunday in CPL Park.

This is a potentially season defining game for both the J1/J2 sides and we ask as many of our members, supporters and friends to pack out CPL Park and get behind the lads.

MATCH PREVIEW BY LONGFORD RFC HEAD COACH GLENN BASKETT

“We are excited to have another crack at Monkstown today after running them close up there at the start of the season. We came away with a performance but only 1 point so we are looking to be better this time out. We’ve had 3 cracking games against them in the last year or so and I’m sure this’ll be no different. We acknowledge what Monkstown are bringing to Longford, but you have to worry about your own game. If you don’t nail your work the game becomes harder. We say Do Your Job, so your mate next to you can just worry about his job. If we do that we will compete, and all anyone can ask is that the boys compete and hope you have your nose ahead after 80 minutes.

Our season hasn’t gone the way we wanted at times, those games we snuck a win at last year, we’ve found we are coming out the wrong side of at the moment. But we’ve drawn a line in the sand, hit reset and we’ve had a few really good training sessions. Not having the Carlow game wasn’t how we’d planned this block, but all we’ve done now is flip the games and said one game at a time and look at the next one Monday morning and see who’s there.”
