Senior Men

Longford’s J1 Senior Men got back on the winning trail on Sunday with a hard fought win versus DLSP in Dublin yesterday.  This keeps them very much in the battle for promotion from Division 1B.  This was the last league match of the 2019, with the league resuming on January 12th with an away trip to Carlow, who sit just behind Longford in fourth place.  To say that this is an important match for Longford would be underestimation with Longford’s last five league matches all turning into mini cup finals.  It will also be an important match for the J2 side in their battle for league honours as Carlow sit just behind Longford in second place.

First up is Longford’s first chance of Silverware for this season when they face Mullingar in the Midland League Final, which will be played in Roscrea this year on December 29th.  It will be a tough match as Mullingar have been doing well in Division 2A this season.  Longford will be looking forward to taking on their neighbours in what is always a tough and entertaining match, with all support appreciated.

The 2020 Provincial Towns Cup Draw will take place in the Aviva Stadium before the Leinster v Northampton Champions Cup game this Saturday.  Fingers crossed for a home draw to start and another good cup run.  The Cup kicks off this year after the league finishes for the first time.

Training continues Tuesday and Friday at 7.30 PM with new and returning players particularly welcome.

Longford Women (Warriors)

Longford Women played their last match of 2019 versus New Ross in a bitterly cold CPL Park and unfortunately succumbed to only their second loss of the season.  They are still well placed to battle for promotion with the league splitting into top and and bottom conferences in the New Year.

Longford Women welcome new players throughout the season with all fitness levels, shapes and sizes are welcome.  The Warriors really are on an upward curve and are making an assault on the Division 4 Title and want you to be a part.  Training is on Tuesdays and Fridays and 7.30.  Drop in to training for a chat or alternatively give Head Coach Nuala McGoey a ring on 0862482005.

Match Reports

Longford U18s

Longford RFC was delighted to accept an invitation to join Seapoint RFC in hosting Titans Rugby, Johannesburg, in the first fixture of their ten day tour of Ireland on Sunday. The hosts, Seapoint, competed against the tourists U13's and U16's while Longford played their U18.5 squad and although the visitors ended up victorious by a scoreline of 22 - 0 Longford competed well against a team that was far bigger physically. Not a Club as we understand the term, Titans Rugby is a rugby initiative in Johannesburg, the aim of which is to provide a platform for those players that are not quite making provincial or selection rugby to put their best foot forward and to assist in the development of these players to their best of their ability and provide coaching and insight at a level to which they aspire.

Coupled with this, their Tour leader and Director of Rugby said that Titans Rugby strives to ensure that proper core values are instilled into Titans Rugby players, teaching such life values as public awareness and social responsibility by supporting various aids and charities and creating awareness for these causes. Titans Rugby, he said, also strives to further grow the exposure of previously disadvantaged player groups and to ensure that these type of players’ have access to top schooling institutes and are supported through their schooling journeys. Part of the Titans Rugby affiliation program is to ensure all its players have access to these institutes and to offer advice and best possible guidance where applicable. Their touring teams are like the well known rugby Barbarians and are made up of players from schools across Johannesburg who accept an invitation to be part of the touring group.

U14M

The U14s played Roscrea in the Midland League and came out second best.  The important thing was that everyone gave 100%.  New players are also welcome, contact Freddie Forde on 08625267541.

U13M

The U13s lost away to a strong Naas side but plugged away throughout to score a try at the end.  New members are welcome, call Padraig on 0862526741 for more information.

U9

Our brilliant U9s; ‘the Mini All Blacks’ took on Tullamore, Mullingar and Edenderry this morning at a Midlands Blitz in Tullamore.  Great performances from all saw a flurry of tries in every game.  Well done to all and to the parents getting them there, Pauline and Kevin.

U12s Sponsorship

In preparation for their eagerly anticipated trip to the RDS on the 12th January to play at half time during Leinster's European Champions Cup game -v- Lyon, Longford's U12's were presented with their new jerseys, generously sponsored by Conor Cassidy Cars, Cranleymore, Edgeworthstown. Longford RFC would like to thank Conor and his team for their most generous sponsorship of the new jerseys.
