By Nuala McGoey Longford Senior Women’s Head Coach

Longford Women took on Wanderers at CPL Park on Sunday.  Following on from last week's narrow defeat, it was important to get back to winning ways.  This was certainly a game of two halves, with Longford in control in the first half and Wanderers exerting pressure in the second.  Longford started well with great breaks made from Rebecca O’Hara and Megan Jobe.  Longford were applying constant pressure and a high tackle on Leanne Keegan lead to a Longford penalty which Megan Banahan converted to make the score 3-0 in Longford’s favour.  Longford were soon back in the opposition 22 with the pack applying massive pressure with good carries. After a number of phases close to the try line, Fidelma Fallon picked up the ball from the bottom of the ruck and with great support play from her fellow forward packs Dora Ledwidth and Michelle Farrell powered over to give Longford a well deserved try. Megan Banahan added the extra two points.  For the remainder of the first half Longford applied lots of pressure but a number of unforced errors and good defending from Wanderers meant Longford could not add to their lead.

The second half started with a resurgence by Wanderers; Longford suddenly found themselves defending for long periods.   Forward Substitutions Rebecca Duffy and Anita Walker helped keep fresh legs on the pitch, which were needed to withstand the pressure from the opposition.  Longford showed good defensive solidity with great tackles going in from Maria Kelleher, Leona Hoare and Amanda Sheridan.  Rebecca O’Hara was also working well at scrumhalf getting good ball out along the home sides backline. Midway through the second half Wanderers made a great break and got the ball out their backs.  Monica Bannon made a great last ditch tackle to force a knock on 5 metres from the Longford line.  Longford struggled to hold onto the ball for the remainder of the game with Wanderers applying constant pressure.  A good maul from Wanderers moved them within inches of the line but Longford held firm and a double movement by a Wanderers player right on the try line prevented the away team scoring a try.  This was much to the relief to the Longford players who were awarded a penalty.  Wanderers were eventually rewarded for their pressure by converting a penalty with the last kick of the game to leave CPL park with a losing bonus point.  We would like to wish a speedy recovery to Leanne Keegan, Megan Jobe, Emma Dardis, Shauna Cahill and Amanda Sheridan who all picked up knocks during the game.  This game showed the importance of a full squad that has been built over the past few years with everyone making an important contribution.
