Senior Men

Longford Senior Men secured a good bonus point win on the road to Boyne on Sunday to continue their pursuit of Monkstown in first place.  The J2 side were awarded a walk over after Boyne disappointingly cancelled the match on Sunday morning.  A friendly may be in the offing next weekend to give this side a well deserved run out after two weeks of cancellations.  The Senior Men have next weekend off before taking on Clondalkin and Tullow at home on successive weekends before finishing off their 2019 league schedule with an away match versus DLSP on December 8th.  That will not be the last match of 2019 as Longford will be defending their Midland League Title versus Mullingar in Roscrea on December 28th.  Training continues Tuesday and Friday at 7.30 PM with new and returning players particularly welcome.

Match Reports

U16

Longford left Edenderry with four Leinster League points but paid a heavy price when losing Lolu Adejinmi to a serious ankle injury. We all wish him the best for his recovery.

The home team were first on the board with five points early on. Longford began to play and a scrum close to the line saw Matthew Flynn crash over with David Keenan adding the extras. There was some concern that a two point lead was very skinny approaching half time but this was increased to nine when Gavin Courage Foynes showed his pace and step and outstripped the defence to score under the posts with Keenan again adding two.

Longford turned into the wind and increased the lead when Josh Osabuehien scored a good individual try. Gavin got his second with David again adding two before Edenderry responded with three tries of their own including a tough penalty try. This narrowed the lead to four but the nerves were settled when man of the match Josh scored another lovely try to record a win on a 31 22 score line. It was a pleasing win with lots to work on. It also marked the debuts for two lads with great potential, Gavin Bawle and Paddy Gill.

Next up is Carlow away on the Leinster League on Saturday.

U13

Longford U13’s were in Athy for the first round of the Leinster league on Saturday last.  As happened in the past Longforrd were slow to start and found themselves chasing the game within the first 10 minutes going behind by three unanswered tries!  The boys were not at game pace and really sat off players to let Athy score unchallenged.  We made a couple of positional adjustments and brought on William McEntire for his first game back after an injury lay off.

The changes helped slow down the pacey Athy lads and brought Longford into the game. Our first try came from William after some good team rucking to score in the corner on the stroke of half time.  The half time score 36-5 to Athy.  We started the second half in better shape and it wasn’t long before William was over for our second score. The tackling was much improved and we worked hard in closing down space, which snuffed out any potential Athy attacks.  Longford exerted some good pressure going forward and were forcing penalties from Athy.  They had multiple attacks driving at the line only to be held back until Senan Murphy went in low to grab a third try for Longford. The fight back continued to bring the score back to 36-15.  Some strong running from William and good support play helped Longford back into the attack zone and William was then on hand to grab his third try of the morning; 36-20.  Athy were struggling to get to grips with Longford at this stage but managed to score one more at the final whistle.  The final score was 43-20.  Next weekend Birr return to CPL park giving Longford the opportunity to avenge our recent defeat in the Midland League.

Longford: Ryan Spollen, Shane McGuigan, James Cosgrove, Conor Gallagher, Danny Kelly, Derek Belton, Jamie Donohue, Daniel Corr, Senan Murphy (1 try), Mel Mulligan, Karl O’Hara, Tom Murray, Donnacha Golden, Ryan Kiernan, Harry Byrne, Mitch Clark, Sean Ginty, Daniel Fahy, Tomas O’Brien, Darragh Nash, Conor Grady, Mikey Glennon, & William MacEntire (3 tries).
