Longford RFC Club News 21/10/2019

Senior Men

Longford Senior Men left Sydney Parade yesterday with a losing bonus point.  Its not the result that they were looking for but it is still early in the season and the league has a long way to run yet.  Next up is Cill Dara in CPL Park in two weeks’ time.  The last meeting of the two sides was last February in the Provincial Towns Cup where Longford overcame a spirited challenge from a team that was promoted from 2A next season.  Further improvement is required from Longford to get to the level that they know they can play at.  On the flip side the Senior Men’s J2 side under the Captaincy of Philly Dardis are flying with four wins from four and are four points clear at the top of the league.  They know there is a long was to go too but it is a great position to be in.

Training continues Tuesday and Friday at 7.30 PM with new and returning players particularly welcome.

Match Reports

U18

Longford U18's recorded their first home win of the season against Tullamore on Sunday with a score of 21 - 17. The game started on a high tempo with Longford attacking early resulting in a well taken try and a conversion by Simon Moorehead. The game settled to a tussle to secure possession with good plays and dogged defending by the home team and it was Longford who secured a second try by Max Napieralski. Longford continued to dominate until the half time whistle sounded.

The restart saw Longford take advantage of a lukewarm start by Tullamore with a break through the middle to give Longford the third try with Gareth O’Hara crossing. Tullamore put up a spirited fight back to score two tries a conversion and a penalty goal and prevented Longford from registering anymore points.

This was a much improved team display by Longford from the previous week with fantastic ball carrying by forwards good lineout functions and strong running by the backs.

Thanks to all the coaches that contributed to the team preparations that led to a great performance on the weekend.

U14

Longford 12 Carlow 5

Longford Under 14’s took on Carlow in the Leinster League on a sunny Saturday evening in CPL Park. Last season Longford had their first competitive game against this same opposition down in Carlow. The difference between the 2 games was that last season we went down there as a team of individuals whereas this year we were playing as a team of players.

The game started with Longford taking the kick off and it was obvious that from looking at a physically strong Carlow team that the game was going to be won up front. From the start Longford put pressure on the Carlow running game and there was some huge defensive work done to hold the game for much of the first half back in the Carlow half of the pitch. This was rewarded in the 2nd quarter when some great rucking by James Grehan and Jack O’Hara driving for the Carlow line, with the ball to popping out and picked by out half Conor Mulligan to slip up by the side and score in the corner. From the following drop off Carlow made a rare incursion into the Longford half. After taking a bang to the head, winger Patrick Murphy, was caught out of position and Carlow saw the gap and scored in the corner. This left the half time score of 5 – 5.

Longford continued the second half the same way that the 1st half went, being constantly pitched in the Carlow 22. There was some great straight line running, peppering the Carlow defence but it held strong till again, James Grehan spotted a gap in their midfield and drove for the line. With 3 or 4 Carlow player hanging out of him, he spun over the line to score under the sticks. With Conor Mulligan converting it left the score 12-5. Carlow pressed hard for the equalling score but the Longford defence held out to leave a final score of Longford 12 Carlow 5.

It was a great team display by all the players. There was great ball carrying by all the forwards, Cathal, Olan, Ciaran, Daniel, Jack, Rian, Ryan, James, Oran & Darragh. But huge credit must be given to the defensive work by the backs, especially at midfield, Jamie, Patrick, Jack Mc, Diarmuid, Jack R, Rian & Alex under the direction of John Mc Mullin from the sideline. The sniping runs down at the fringes by half backs, Dylan and Conor, kept Carlow constantly guessing as to the direction of play. Credit to Carlow for making the long journey up and put in some massive tackles and attacks in this well balanced encounter.

Thanks as always to the coaches, Kevin (resident photographer), our first aider, Courtney but a special thanks to all the parents for providing the usual high quality food to feed the troops and ensuring Carlow had some hot food in the stomachs for the long journey home.

No match scheduled for this Bank Holiday weekend but training as usual this Thursday 7 to 8:30.

U13

The U13’s took on Carrick on Shannon in a challenge game on Sunday morning.

Conditions were perfect for the game although there was a strong breeze blowing from the far end. We fielded a reasonably strong line up but were without a number of regular starters.

Longford started well in the first few minutes, retaining possession as we edged up the field but ultimately gave away a penalty to end the phases. Carrick used the breeze to kick for territory and not long after they took advantage of our inability to close down space or tackle and scored under the posts.

Straight from the restarts we were again chasing shadows and on two occasions Carrick were in under the posts with strong running from their centre. 0-21.

From the next kick off we worked hard to pressure the opposition and good rucking and tackling forced some errors. Our scrum was excellent throughout giving us a good platform to attack. We just seemed to lack that bit of confidence in carrying. The pressure was telling on Carrick and we eventually Daniel Corr crashed over for our first score. Half time score 5-21.

The second half resumed and Longford put pressure on from their own kick off. The handling errors mounted for Carrick which gave us good territory to work off with our scrum firing well. Daniel Corr worked hard with James Cosgrove and Danny Kelly to give forward momentum. New player Conor Gallagher was putting in a good shift in support and strong ball carrying. We worked our way to the 5m and Ryan Spollen was on hand to score the second try. 12-21

From the kickoff we failed to get close to the powerful Carrick centre who ran the pitch to again dot down under the posts. 12-28.

From here on it was all Longford. The lads seems to switch on and rucked, drove forward and tackled with intent. Daniel Corr won several turnovers. Harry Byrne crossed close to the posts for try number three and shortly after Senan Murphy’s try and conversion brought the score to 26-28. For the first time in the game the lads could see the finish line!

Our pressure on the Carrick line was telling but they managed to clear the lines only for the Longford lads to regather and maintain the onslaught. Carrick were penalised for infringing a couple of times and the lads went for fast tap and go penalties. The play came wide to the right for Jamie Donohue to five over for the winning score. As the conversion went wide the game was over.

The lads were delighted to the come back from 21 points down and win the game. Hopefully we will kick on from the experience and not put ourselves in such a difficult position again.

Next outing Wednesday evening away to Wilson’s and back at home to Birr on Saturday next.

Longford: Ryan Spollen, Mitch Clark, Sean Ginty, Danny Kelly, James Cosgrove, Conor Gallagher, Jamie Donohoe, Daniel Corr, Senan Murphy, Harry Byrne, Niall Connaghton, Donnacha Golden, Tom Murray, Darragh Nash, Derek Belton, Daniel Fahey, Matthew Kenny, Cian Gray, Ryan Kiernan, Mikey Glennon.
