31/03/19 Paul Cusack Cup 1st Round Longford 19 Portdara 36

By Nuala McGoey Women’s Head Coach

Longford took on Third Division side Port Dara in the first round of the Cup on Sunday. After having an eight week break between league and cup this was always going to be a very tough day out. Port Dara started strongly, rucking aggressively and turning over the ball.  It didn’t take long for them to score their first try. Longford were very rusty and found it hard to get up to the pace of the match but they were working hard to try and contain the more experienced visitors. Several times Longford were close to the try line but poor decision making and some great defence meant they just could not get the score they deserved. With half time approaching and finding themselves 27 points down Longford finally got the break they needed. The ball was spread out the backline and fullback Rebecca O’Hara was over in the corner for a try but a high tackle meant the referee awarded a penalty try and showed a yellow card to the Port Dara player.   The half time score was Longford 7 Port Dara 27.

Longford were a much improved team for the second half with the forwards putting some good phases together and the backs making great breaks. Longford’s scrum was working really well and they even managed to steal a few against the head, from one of these scrums the ball was flashed across the backline and Maria Kelleher outpaced everyone to score with the conversion narrowly missed. Port Dara came back with a couple of tries of their own after the home team gave away a few penalties. But Longford were not giving up and after a working their way up the field Rachael O’Farrell powered her way through the defence to score under the post’s with the last play of the game and Megan Banahan added the two points. Longford can be proud how they never gave up and worked hard to get back into the game against a very strong side. Special word has to go to Roisin Shaw on her first senior cap with a player of the match performance. It’s great to see young players coming up from underage. Irene Murtagh, Fidelma Fallon, Louise Hillary, Rebecca Duffy, Michelle Farrell, Roisin Shaw, Nicola Farrell, Dora Ledwith, Emma Dardis, Megan Banahan, Rachael O Farrell, Megan Jobe, Laura Gallagher, Maria Kelleher, Rebecca O’Hara, Anita Walker, Natalie O’Reilly, Shauna Cahill & Monica Bannon.

Next up is the first round of the plate away next Sunday against another 3rd div side Suttonians.

Great Performance sees Longford U16s lift the Leinster Shield

Longford U16’s played like lions against R&B Rebels in the Leinster Shield Final on Sunday past. The team played their best rugby of the season against a physical side that travelled to Longford to win. Three tries and a conversion was superior on the day to the Rebels single try giving Longford U16 their first silverware of the season on the last match day of the season. The score ended 17 - 5. Longford are 2018/2019 shield champions! Well done lads!

U14 & U15

Both the U14s & U15s were on the road in Cup competitions but unfortunately did not come away with wins.  Congratulations to both sides on great seasons.  No doubt you will be in the battle for silverware next season!

Over 300 Longford Mini/Youth Players & Parents travel to the Avia Stadium

It was a day to remember for many of our underage players as they made the trip to the Aviva Stadium to witness Leinster’s narrow win over Ulster in the Champions Cup Quarter Finals This was the third big trip to the season organised by our Mini section and one of the big benefits of playing rugby in the Longford RFC.  Great credit most go to Youth Chair Gerry Carthy, Mini Coordinator Padraig Murphy and all the Parents and Coaches for organising the trips.  Hopefully it will inspire our next generation of players and who knows, some of them could be playing for the Boys in Blue in seasons to come.
