Longford Senior Men face Monkstown in crucial game   04/01/2019

Longford Senior Men return to Leinster League action with a bang this weekend when they face third placed Monkstown in their first game of 2019. Longford will be going into the game with a lot of confidence after securing the Midland League Title versus Edenderry 31-10 last Saturday.  However, they know that Monkstown will present a far bigger challenge and are coming to CPL park on the back of a five match winning streak.  Longford edged out Monkstown away in Sydney Parade in October to score a superb 14-21 but know they will have to be at their best versus Monkstown.  As can be seen from the league table below only one point separates Longford from Monkstown and who emerges winner from the fixture is likely to be the main challenger to Suttonians for league honours with five matches remaining.  The Early XV are also well in the shake up for the title but need a win versus Monkstown to reignite their bid.  The Early XV Match kicks off at 13:00 followed by the Late XV match at 14:30.  Big support is requested for the lads who have been working very hard over Christmas towards this match.

The match versus Monkstown is the first of three matches at home in CPL Park on consecutive weekends, with DLSP visting next Sunday and an attractive home first round fixture in the Provincial Towns Cup versus Cill Dara the following Sunday.  It is by no means an easy draw for Longford, with Cill Dara lying in second place in Division 2A (the Division below Longford).  However, the lure of a home cup fixture is certain to draw a big crowd to CPL Park on January 20th and with Longford’s good form in 1B this year the lads will be training hard looking to earn a good run in the famous competition. The Provincial Towns Cup is one of the oldest rugby cup competitions and widely regarded as one of the Premier Junior Rugby cup competitions in the world.

The draw was also recently made for the Provincial Towns Seconds Cup, which the Early XV will compete in.  They were drawn away to face Athy 2nd XV on Sunday February 3rd.  The Early XV are going well this season and will be looking to continue the progress with a good cup run.
