Senior Men

Longford Senior Men travelled to Sydney Parade to face a strong Monkstown side yesterday.  The Late XV recorded a fantastic 21-14 win despite go behind after only two minutes.  That makes it three from three so far in the league in what has been a very impressive start to the season.  The Early XV also went behind early, when they eventually got into their stride they put Monkstown under a lot of pressure but ultimately went down 27-17.  Both sides face another trip to Dublin this Sunday to play De La Salle Palmerstown at Kirwan Park, Kiternan, Dublin.  DLSP are new opponents for Longford and it will undoubtedly be a very tough set of matches.  Your support in Dublin would be greatly appreciated.

Upcoming Fixtures:

Sunday October 21st Leinster League DLSP (Away).

Early Side KO 1.30 PM Late Side KO 3PM.

Sunday November 4th Leinster League Tullow (Home).

Sunday November 11th Leinster League Suttonian’s (Away).

Sunday November 25th Leinster League North Kildare (Home).

Early Side KO 1 PM Late Side KO 2.30 PM.

Longford Woman

Longford Woman took on Greystones in CPL Park yesterday and despite a good performance went down to a very experienced Greystones side.

15/10/18 Leinster Woman’s League Division 4 Longford 19 Greystones 37

Longford came up against a very strong and experienced Greystones side who had come down from Division 3 last season. Greystones scored early and the inexperienced Longford team took some time to settle. Longford scored one try in the first half from a line-out where the ball went to centre Maira Kelleher who burst through the defensive line and out ran everyone to score out wide.

Longford were a much improved team in the second half despite being down a player due to an injury. The teams second try was scored by Megan Banahan.  After some great work from the forwards, she powered over the line from close range and then converted it herself. With only twenty seconds left on the clock Longford managed to score one more try through Maira Kelleher, who again broke through a number of tackles.  None of the opposition players were able to catch her as she sped down the side line to score under the posts with the conversion scored by Megan. This was another great learning experience for this up and coming team who now head to Naas RFC next Sunday.

The Warriors train every Tuesday and Friday night at 7.30 PM. New players of all fitness levels are welcome, even if you have not played before. Contact Nuala on 082482005.

Longford Mini/Youths

It was a very busy weekend for Longford Mini/Youths with match reports below.  Our U12 Girls played at half time during the Leinster A Celtic Cup Semi-Final against Munster.

Longford Girls play in Donnybrook during half time of Leinster Celtic Cup Game

Longford Girls U12s had the honour of playing Old Belvedere in Donnybrook during the half time interval of Leinster A’s Celtic Cup Semi-final v Munster. Jodie Robinson, Dervla Walsh, Isabella Larkin and Abbie Keogh all scored tries.  To round off the day the girls went on to watch Leinster’s big win v Wasps in the RDS in the Champions Cup.  This was the first game of rugby for most of the girls and they played excellently.  U12 Girls is newly launched in the club this season and we welcome new players.  Girls/Woman’s rugby is one of the fastest growing team sports in the worlds with the chance to represent Leinster and Ireland on the world stage.  Please give Lisa Brady a ring if you want more information on 087 6119960.  The Girls train on a Sunday morning at 10.30 am and there will be lots of matches organised in the coming months.

The Longford U12 Girls Squad

U17s

Longford U17s played Tullamore in the Leinster League on Saturday. Unfortunately, Longford were short a number of their stronger players.  This made playing Tullamore away, who are one of the top teams in Leinster; a difficult prospect but also a great opportunity for newcomers to test themselves at the top level.  Longford did well for first half holding Tullamore to 14-0.  However, they ran away with it in the second half, 55-0. The stand out players for Longford were Ultan O'Sullivan who did his best at full back to halt the tide, Kyle Garcia playing in his first season with us and Seamus McKeon as usual leading the charge up front. Next up the U17s Longford player Enniscorthy at home.

U12 Blitz in Wilson Hospital

Our U12’s headed to Wilson’s Hospital for another blitz after a tough round of games in Tullamore the previous week. A solid start v Edenderry earned us a draw against a team that scored at will just three weeks ago. Two games against Mullingar 1&2 yielded two wins with tries from William McEntire, Jamie Donoghue and Daniel Corr. The final game against a big Tullamore team was nip and tuck ending honours even.

The real story of the day was the huge effort put in by the entire squad. Each one showed grit and determination to fight for each other, pulling from their training and game experience over the last 6 weeks to produce the performance and results in each of the four games. This left the lads buzzing with pride and confidence going into our next block of fixtures.

Next up is a Blitz in Mullingar next Saturday followed by a visit of all Cavan minis on 27th.

The U12 Squad

U9, U10 & U11 Blitz v Midland Warriors

Our U9&10 and U11 groups welcomed Midland Warriors minis to Longford Rugby club for the first time on Sunday.

We fielded two teams of U9&10 to take on the visiting U10 team and we had a full squad of U11s taking on the Warriors U12’s (as our own U12’s had only played in Wilson’s on Saturday!). There were plenty of try’s scored by both clubs in this first game day between the clubs and all in all we had great fun on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning. Afterwards we had a full house in the Hugh Connolly centre as both teams were treated to a fine spread provided by our brilliant parents. Our visiting coaches and parents complimented our fine facilities and the hospitality our club extended on the day.

Many thanks to our parents for their kind contributions. Next up for the U10 squad is the Aviva Festival in Tullamore while the U11s head to Mullingar.

Club News

Diary of Minis Trip to Leinster v Munster in the Aviva Stadium by Padraig Murphy Minis Coordinator.

After a busy morning in Tullamore for our U11&12 teams, all roads led back to base in CPL Park to gather for the trip to the Leinster v Munster Pro14 derby at the Aviva.

3 buses were quickly filled for the trip to Landsdowne Road with many of our young minis still beaming after their great performances at their blitz matches in Tullamore.

After drop off in Dublin and a short walk to the Aviva we settled into the North stand right at the goals. Leinster and Ireland stars were going through their warmup right in front of us. The match itself yielded a penalty try and a super James Lowe Try for Leinster down our end of the pitch and they ran out eventual winners.

Back on board with the excited crew for the return journey and the highlight of the trip for the younger members of the groups was the refreshment pitstop in Applegreen.  After 11.00 pm we arrived back at base with some very weary and sleepy minis after a long but very enjoyable day.

We hope to do the same again later on in the season.
