Longford kick off their 2018 Midland League with Resounding Win   05/09/2018

03/09/2018 Midland League Section A Edenderry 10 Longford 47

Longford kicked off their 2018 Midland Campaign with a resounding win away to Edenderry on Monday past.  A new look Longford side with four U19s in the squad put in an impressive performance where they ran in seven tries to Edenderry’s two.

Edenderry started off well bringing the game to Longford.  However, Longford absorbed the pressure, turned the ball over and carried the game to Edenderry.  Debutant Scrum Half Ryan McHugh capitalised after strong carries by Barry Stewart and Liam Brady crossing the white wash after six minutes, which he converted himself to put Longford 7-0 in the lead.  In a great debut from McHugh he notched up 6 conversions by the end of the night.

Longford then huffed and puffed for the next 15 minutes gradually building up an irresistible head of steam which Edenderry had no answer to.  On 21 minutes Full Back Darragh Connolly went over for Longford’s second try following a great carry by Liam Brady and cut out pass from out half Colm Glynn.  This was quickly followed by a try from flanker Hubie Connolly to put Longford 21-0 up after 30 minutes.

On 35 minutes Shane Rodgers went over for Longford’s best try of the match where a great line and delayed pass from Colm Glynn saw Rodgers carve through the home defence and touch down under the posts to leave the score 28-0.

To Edenderry’s credit they rallied either side of half time scoring two unconverted tries to put some doubt in the visitor’s mind.  However, Longford responded well and scored three more tries to notch up a 47-10 win by full time.  The second half tries were scored by Colm Glynn, new father Philly Dardis and Eamon Kinehan.

Overall, the match was a good workout with some slick handling and interplay between forwards and backs on show.  As always Head Coach Glenn Baskett will be looking for further improvement in Longford’s next match v Tullamore in CPL Park, Longford on Sunday at 3 PM.

Congratulations to a number of players on their Longford Competitive Senior Debuts; Sammy Murphy, Ryan McHugh, Robbie Shaw, Brian Hanley, David Gilmore and Michael Casey.
