Development side score an impressive win in Tullow   27/11/2017

26/11/2017 Leinster Seconds League Division 1B Tullow 21 Longford Development XV 27

by Robert Lee

Longford’s Development side put in a truly remarkable performance against the top of the table Tullow in the earlier game, winning by 27-21 to the shock and dismay of the local support. The returning Karl Murray, a Lisduff native, was the star of the show alongside the affable Jimmy Connolly who scored two beautiful tries in the second half.
Longford were trailing 14-7 at half time and after losing Dara Connolly to a bruised eye and Paul Tracy to a cut over the ear that later required stitches, Longford rallied and tested the Tullow defence at every occasion. Liam Brady was simply superb in the pack with his impressive pace and power in the carry followed by the three Geelan brothers who certainly don’t concede a backward step and can’t comprehend the word defeat.  One also has to mention the three Connolly brothers from College Park who also play to a telepathic level. Aaron Beirne was brilliant in all exchanges and showed his agility and speed on numerous occasions while combatting a larger Tullow pack. Alan Campbell and Dara Connolly were extremely busy as they pulled the strings in the Longford backline with the ever impressive James Mimnagh showing his pace on the left wing.
There is no doubt that Jimmy Connolly was man of the match in his first game after returning from a knee operation over a year and a half ago. Despite his greying hair, he is now firmly challenging the first teamers for a place in the team alongside Liam Brady, amongst others.
Longford's ability to compete in the first's league is all down to the depth of the panel. This is thanks to the quality of players in this development team. Many of the Development side are pushing for first team spots. Training on Tuesday and Friday this week should be a very interesting place to be, with an average attendance of 40 players per training session, with the lads continuing to push each other for silverware in both leagues.
