Longford Woman have useful friendly run out against Portlaoise   21/11/2017

Longfords match against Dundalk was postponed due to Dundalk not being able to field a team, so a friendly was arranged against Portlaoise.

Longford started well and straight away had Portlaoise pinned back in their 22. Longfords forwards were working hard at the breakdown and when the ball went out the backs they looked dangerous all day. Laura Gallagher made a great break and was almost in for a try but got tackled into touch right on the try line. Portlaoise did well to relieve the pressure by getting in a good kick to touch from the lineout. Emma Dardis and Rebecca O Hara were combining well in attacked and with great support play from Michelle Farrell they were causing Portlaoise a lot of problems. Longford were playing contested scrums for only the second time this season so it was great practice for the front row of lrene Murtagh, Margaret Mckenna and Fidelma Fallon especially with portlaoise having a strong scrum. The visitors started to get into the game more and worked their way into Longfords 22. Portlaoise were making the longford defence work hard and having sucked in a lot of players they found a gap and went over for the first try of the match.
From the kick off the home side were again on the attack with Joanne McCormack in only her second game at number 8 proving hard to stop. Lorraine Connor was running great support lines from fullback and almost broke loose several times. Half time 5 to 0

The second half was another tight contest with both team's not giving an inch. Longford put together some good moves with Rebecca Duffy and Kirsty Smyth getting their hands on the ball. It was proving difficult to break down the portlaoise defence and the longford lineout was not working well. Nicola Farrell and Rachel Mckenna were putting in some cracking tackles all day. But it was portlaoise who found a hole in the longford defence to score under the posts and the conversion made it 12 to 0. The home side were starting to tire but winger Rebecca Duffy was not letting that stop her. Longford started to put in some good kicks pinning portlaoise back and were unlucky not to get a try. This was a great contest against two well match teams and the longford players will have learned a lot from this run out.

They now have a week off before their last two games before the Christmas break.
