Match Reports;

U17 Leinster League Longford U17 38 Newbridge 31

Longford Under 17s had their first outing on Saturday before last with a game against Newbridge. Coaches were delighted to see that we had a full panel of 22 players for the game. Newbridge advised that they were fielding some schools players which is against the rules but Longford were very anxious to get game time so we were more than happy to accept this.

Longford started well and showed a clear dominance in the pack. Our front row of Finn Brady, James Murphy and Craig Gorman were excellent and we had complete control in the scrums. Both props missed most of last year due to injury so it was great to see their return to form. John Corcoran came on for James in the second half and made great yards in the loose.

Our lineout was also getting great return with Ciaran McGlynn supported by Ryan Burgess poaching most of the Newbridge ball Daniel Reilly's move to the back row also worked well and his support play was excellent. William Higgins also tackled well on the Newbridge open side.

Man of the match has to go to Gareth O'Hara who had an outstanding game. His work rate was enormous and he scored 3 outstanding tries. None of these were handed to him and he had to power through 5 or 6 players for each try. He worked well with Micheal Dunne and Newbridge never knew what play was being called.

Dario was moved from his normal first center position to try him out as outhalf. He seemed very comfortable and scored 2 excellent tries. Dave Connolly at no 12 tackled non stop and was a great asset to the backs. Jack Finnegan also had a great game with 2 try saving tackles and a 25M carry to touch down in the corner after a fine piece of Longford handling.

Simon Morehead had a great day with the boot. His drop offs were excellent and he converted 4 of the 6 try conversations.

Despite the 6 tries by Longford, it was by no means a one sided affair. Newbridge fought hard and were rarely more the a score behind. The final score was 38:31 and Longford were delighted to kick the ball out of play to secure the win.
