10/09/2017 Midland League Group 1 Tullamore 07 Longford 24 By Anton Glynn

Longford RFC Senior Mens XV continued their storming start to the Midland League campaign with a comprehensive win on the road against Tullamore.

Following on from their historic 66-09 away victory over old rivals Mullingar on Wednesday night, a Longford side featuring 10 positional and personnel changes, continued the great work with another solid away win over the Offaly men last Sunday.

On a day when the wind blew a gale, in contrast with the benign conditions on Wednesday night, all the personnel changes put their hands up for future inclusion in the starting team with a performance full of vigour and promise.

This changing of the guard augers well for stiff competition for places in what promises to be an exciting rugby team for the new season.

Longford started brightly and following some crisp and hard running rugby, Longford were rewarded after five minutes when winger Sean Smith scored a try with aplomb following a good blind side move.

Despite going 05-07 down after 12 minutes, Longford rallied and scored again on 16 minutes when Sean Flynn finished a fine sweeping backline move, by gliding in between two bemused defenders for a mercurial finish. The conversion by Joe McGowan left Longford in front 12-7.

Another scintillating back line move after 27 minutes was finished in style once again by Flynn who scored another fine try. This proved to be the last score of the first half leaving the score 07-17 in favour of Longford at half time.  As expected Tullamore came roaring back and Longford had to withstand sustained pressure for much of the second half. However they never buckled and kept their line intact thanks to hard work and great team spirit.

They lifted the siege eventually and got their just rewards when following some great pressure exerted by the pack they were awarded a penalty try after 77 minutes, to leave the final score 07-24.

Longford’s first home game will be next Sunday at CPL park, when Edenderry will visit. The kick off will be at 1.30pm so there is plenty of time to have an enjoyable look at this invigorating and exciting running rugby team.
